Tirrenia II
1914

Launched in 1914 in Southampton as Sapho II, this beautiful 69ft
Frederick Shepherd-designed ga ketch was renamed Tirrenia
II in 1924 by Cavaliere Guido Fiorentino, president of the
Neapolitan branch of the Italian Royal Yacht Club. She was
subsequently sailed by a number of owners, and was fi rst
restored in the early 1990s before taking part in numerous
classic yachting events.
Sold again at auction in 2016, Tirrenia II was brought by her
new owner to the Del Carlo yard at Viareggio, where she has
just completed a comprehensive refi t and restoration under
Emilio Zaccagni. She was re-launched with much ceremony in
June, with a handsome Riva runabout acting as harbour tug!

HRH Prince Michael of Kent paid a visit to Paddle Steamer
Medway Queen on 4 June.
He was welcomed by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent and
Admiral Lord West, President of the Medway Queen
Preservation Society. The Mayor of Medway, Habib Tejan, was
also among the welcoming party.
The society hopes the event will prove to be a springboard
for serious future fund-raising needed to complete the
restoration of Medway Queen. In the short term £20k is needed
to enable the steamer to attend the Dunkirk 80th Anniversary
commemorations in Ramsgate next year. The longer-term vision
is to get the ship back in steam, ideally by July 2024 which is
the centenary of her fi rst sailing. medwayqueen.co.uk
