Tonje Hvalvik
Jotun

Please tell us a bit about Jotun
Jotun is one of the world's leading
manufacturers of decorative, marine,
protective and powder coatings. Jotun
products are available in more than 100
countries and the group has 40
production facilities and more than
9,800 employees globally. The Jotun
Group’s sales in 2017 totalled NOK
16.4 billion (£1.5 billion). Head o‡ce is
in Sandefjord, Norway where it all
began in 1920.

What is this sponsorship you are
giving to Ash and his barge Growler?
Having sponsored all the paint for
Lively Lady in 2018, we wanted to find
another exciting project to back in

  1. The sponsorship is to supply all
the coatings required to complete the
    restoration project Ash is undertaking
    (see Yard News). Sponsoring
    restoration projects is important to
retain sailing heritage in the UK.

How did you hear about Ash and his
project?
Ash and his friend Ben sent in a very
detailed four-page document
outlining all aspects of how Project
Growler came into existence as their
entry. After watching their YouTube
videos and looking at their other
social media pages, their enthusiasm
for the restoration was clear to see
and really captured our attention.

What made you choose Ash as the
winner?
We had a significant number of
entries from as far afield as Turkey.
Almost all of them could have been
potential winners and it took an entire
morning for us to discuss and choose
Ash as the winner. Project Growler is
a particularly worthy winner, as
alongside being a vessel of
considerable historic standing, the
opportunity to support two very
young sailors in developing their
technical skills and pushing personal
boundaries through the restoration
fits well with the culture and ethos
within Jotun. At a time when the
yacht industry needs to encourage a
new generation, we hope that Ash
and Ben provide inspiration to many
other young people.

Which of your products will Ash use?l
Our technical team has created a
paint specification for Ash which
includes single and two-pack primers
and topcoats for varying areas of the
vessel. Due to the potential
movement of the build, single-pack
Easygloss will be used on the
topsides, with Racing, a hard
antifouling below the waterline (she
will likely sit in mud between tides).
Our popular Ravilakk varnish will be
used extensively all over and the
epoxy sheathed cabin deck will be
coated with Xtreme Gloss.

What are your most popular
products for wooden boats?
Ravilakk varnish is a best seller with a
large following amongst wooden boat
builders and owners across Europe. It
is exceptionally flexible, whilst still
remaining very durable with a high
gloss. Nonstop II eroding antifouling
over fast drying and extremely well
adhering Vinyl Primer is also a very
popular underwater paint scheme,
particularly now it comes with a nine
month guarantee.

Do you have any exciting new
products in the near future?
Our global research and development
team are constantly working to
evolve the Jotun paint range, but we
also understand that our loyal
customers have their favourites which
they don’t want us to mess around
with. As such we tend not to have
new releases every year, but make
sure when we do, they really stand
out. We can’t say more than that at
the moment!

Jotun will repeat the restoration
sponsorship competition for 2020.

PICTURE PERFECT
Capri Classica inspires
artist Anna Boulter
When we shared spectacular photography of May's
schooner racing in Capri (July CB/classicboat.co.uk), little
did we know that artist Anna Boulter was crewing aboard
Naema. This wonderful "rough sketch" (Anna's description
not ours! Ed) of Naema's chief rival, the Herreshof-
designed Marriette of 1915, seems perfectly to evoke
conditions at the event. Anna tells us she's contemplating
a full-size version of the sketch in oils, as part of a new
collection she's been invited to exhibit at the Classic
Regatta at Club De Mar in Palma this August.

CLARIFICATION: In ‘Lively Lady’ (May CB), we mention the
International Boatbuilding Training College in Portsmouth.
The college by that name is, in fact, in Lowestoft. IBTC
Portsmouth, despite a similarity of name, is unrelated.
