Getting afloat

This is the first of the special, salvaged boats. Very
little is known about her, but shipwright Will Stirling
at the nearby Covered Slipway in Plymouth thinks she
might date from the 1870s or 1880s, judging by the construction – the hog,
for instance, is fastened to the keelson by trunnels. She’s about 27ft long, straight-
stemmed, and with an extravagantly long counter. Treluggan is o„ering the boat
as a project for completion, but buyers should be aware this is a big project. £POA

HOLMAN 26

The Holman 26 (right)
was Kim Holman’s 37th
design, dating from 1960.
She’s a simple, fractional
sloop, like his more
famous Stella of 1959 but
in carvel, a touch longer
and with deeper draught
and a doghouse for
better accommodation.
She was the answer, back
then, for clients wanting
something like a Stella but a little larger, and her nickname in the Holman
and Pye oƒce was the “Stellabut”. These are reputedly very seaworthy
yachts, with deep draught and high ballast ratio, and thought by some to
be faster than the Stella. This one, built of mahogany planks on oak
frames, has no rig and a seized engine (Yanmar 2GM20). She clearly
needs at least some planking work as well. Asking £500

HALCYON 23

She might look like someone’s nightmare right
now but the Halcyon 23, designed by Alan
Buchanan in the early 1960s, scrubs up well as an
attractive little ‘glassic’. They were built between
1965 and 1975 by O’shore Yachts, and a Yachts
and Yachting article in the 1970s commended
them for their decent, if unremarkable sailing
characteristics, “better than average interiors” and
ease of working, with 10in-wide side decks. This
one (left), is a
bilge-keel variant
(they also came with
bulb keels), and has
no engine and no rig,
but looks in
reasonable condition.
Hard to argue at the
asking price of £100.

MARY

Mevagissey-built tosher
The second of the salvage projects, Mary is a
Mevagissey-built tosher of about 19ft. She dates
from the 1880s, and needs everything above the
waterline redoing, and possibly some work below
it, too. Like Pierette, this is a big project, although
simpler, as she’s an open boat with a rig in good
condition ready to go on. £POA

PIERETTE

A real gem to save

The Treluggan Boatyard in Cornwall
is having a clear-out and has a number
of GRP project bargains, as well as a
couple of very special, older boats, that
it has salvaged for the right buyer
