Abeking & Rasmussen YACHTS

A

beking & Rasmussen proudly launched the 80m Excellence in
Lemwerder, northern Germany, where the yacht showed off a
radical exterior by Winch Design that could make her one of the
stars of this year’s Monaco Yacht Show from September 25-28.
The experienced owner’s brief was that his latest yacht was to be
‘extraordinary’ and to create a seamless feeling of openness and connection
to the outside world. Features include a swimming pool, swim platform,
jacuzzi, sprawling beach club and impressive limousine tenders.
The yacht was launched in front of her owner early on a Saturday
morning, when the first rays of sun and reflections of the sky could be seen
in the large glass panels that dominate the superstructure and much of the
length of the hull. Following the launch, sea trials commenced along the
Weser river and out on the North Sea.
With a design that blurs the lines between hull and superstructure,
Winch has created a genuinely ground-breaking yacht, whose many notable
characteristics include a striking, angular reverse bow.
Winch Design descriptions of the exterior include ‘a silhouette
comparable to a spaceship’ and ‘a superstructure so unique that she
promises to be unlike anything that has ever come before and will turn as
many heads in 20 years’ time as she does today’.
The exterior lines draw the eye up to the bridge and owner’s decks,

which are surrounded on all sides by curved floor-to-ceiling mirrored glass,
the largest panel a staggering 6m in length. The statement glass reaches 180
degrees around the master suite, meaning sleeping guests can wake up in
the morning fully immersed in their surroundings.
Abeking & Rasmussen’s experienced in-house engineering succeeded
in installing these glass panels without disturbing the unique view through
disruptive structures.
Hans Schaedla, CEO of Abeking & Rasmussen, said: “We are very
proud of this extraordinary yacht and our exceptional workforce, who
mastered all requirements bravely. Never before have glass panels been
installed in these dimensions.
“The unusual lines also repeatedly presented employees with major
challenges. Now we have developed and successfully finished this
masterpiece, we can hardly wait for the sea trials.”
The interior of Excellence, also penned by Winch Design, is a fitting
match for her iconic exterior.
Andrew Winch, founder of Winch Design in 1986, said: “Excellence
represents a huge milestone for Winch. A completely unique superstructure,
she signifies an innovative and exciting new genre for Winch Design.”
