Merritt
Richardson
THE BLACK WATCH
OF CANADA, HIGHLAND
REGIMENT
Merritt was born in South
Bar, near Sydney, N.S., on
March 22, 1922. He joined the
Canadian Army in 1942 and
was sent overseas in 1944.

Merritt passed away
on March 7, 2019.

“I remember we
were going into battle
that afternoon, just
around St. Martens. We
were going up there and
all of a sudden we were
starting to get hit, people
dropping and getting
killed. They kept us
pinned down for about
three hours. When they
pin you down like that,
there’s nothing you
can do. Two or three of
them (Germans) came
down with their weapons
drawn. They don’t leave
you with any doubt
in your mind they’ll shoot
you if you don’t do what
you’re told. We were
taken prisoner.”
