WARM GLOW BELOW
Traditionalists love Catalinas for their cosy
wooden interiors and this hull is no different,
with rich teak throughout, demonstrated upon
quality joinery.
This MKII layout has the galley aft, with
dinette central and a chart table opposite on
starboard. Electronics include a chartplotter, radar
and autopilot.
The dayhead is handily located near the
companionway, while aft has one double cabin
(with lazarette on port side).
Between is the engine housing for the 50
horsepower Yanmar, which in following with
this boat's traditional approach uses the more
seaworthy shaftdrive (as opposed to the sail drive
units found on many modern yachts).
The galley is well equipped with three burner
gas stove, oven, microwave and fridge. Further
comforts come in the way of double sinks and a
hot water system.
Good design abounds, such as the rounded
edges on all joinery to avoid bruising crew at sea.
Plenty of natural light comes from portlights,
cabin windows and opening skylights.

SOLID HULL
The hull is solid fibreglass, reinforced with a
moulded liner that incorporates the cabin sole
and furniture facings.
With the launch of the MKII, Catalina
switched to vinylester resin, thus limiting
osmotic blistering.
However, during your pre-purchase survey,
ensure time is spent checking this moulded liner
and beneath it (for any cracks).
Other features of the under profile include a
deep spade rudder and shallow winged keel on
the review boat – ideal for shoal waters like the
boat's base on Lake Macquarie.
Catalina has always used lead ballast and our
review boat's 3,765 kilogram winged keel equates
to a very seaworthy 40 per cent ballast ratio –
allowing the Catalina 42 to hold her sail plan
in stronger winds.
Auxiliary power comes from a 50 horsepower
Yanmar four-cylinder diesel (professionally
serviced) with three-bladed folding propeller to
maximise sailing performance.
Overall, this is a functional and seaworthy
design and worthy of consideration.
