George Ernest Morrison was born in 1852 in
Geelong and spent his early years devouring the
works of expedition journalists such as Henry
Morton Stanley.
Between school and university, Morrison
embarked on his first adventure, walking almost
1,000 kilometres of coastline from Queenscliff to
Adelaide. He sold the diary of his trip to the Leader
and thus began a series of canoeing and walking
expeditions, sandwiched between university terms.
His studies suffered as a consequence of his
restless nature, so after failing university exams for
the second year running, Morrison boarded a ship
in 1882 bound for New Hebrides (now Vanuatu).
This ship, named Lavinia, was taking part in an
activity known as ‘blackbirding’, which involved
coercing and kidnapping South Sea Islanders for

unpaid or poorly paid labour – essentially, it was an
Australian slave trade.
Morrison, however, went aboard as an
undercover reporter working with The Age. He
was outraged by what he saw and exposed the
exploitative industry to his readers. The public
outrage that stemmed from Morrison’s investigation
was enough to prompt the government to move
toward outlawing the practice. By 1884 courts were
handing down severe jail terms for blackbirders,
such as the crew of the Hopeful.
Though it took some time to stamp out the
practice entirely, there’s no doubt that George
Ernest Morrison’s wanderlust played a key role
in ending Australia’s slave trade – proof that the
spirit of adventure enables brave people to do
great things.
