T

here’s a real trend among recent yacht
releases of blending new technology with
time-proven designs.
So it comes as no real surprise that the new
Classic 65 from Vicem Yachts features IPS drives
under the surface and trawler-style lines up top.
The Annapolis, Maryland-based US yard turns
out traditional ‘Down-Easter’-style motoryachts
from its yard in Turkey under the Classic range,
but the 65 sedan is the latest addition to a diverse
Vicem lineup that includes everything from
sportsfishers to superyachts.
The long and comparatively high bow of
this 20-metre yacht sweeps back to a compact
pilothouse that gives the impression of a much
smaller boat, but rest assured there’s plenty of
room on the aft deck for recreation and ample
space belowdecks, too.

The Classic 65 on display at last year’s Fort
Lauderdale International Boat Show featured a
midships master stateroom with walkaround bed
and a large ensuite with a massive 2.26 metres of
headroom, courtesy of that upright bow shape.
Vicem marine engineer Sinan Unal said the
goal with this 65-footer was to create a yacht
with a real sense of space.
“One thing that invariably leads to discomfort
on a boat is headroom,” he said.
“Even with a wide beam and lots of windows,
if the ceiling is just a few inches above the head,
people will start feeling claustrophobic very soon.
“We challenged our engineers to achieve this
unrivalled space without altering the classic
proportions of our exterior, so this yacht's look is
classic Vicem – sleek, elegant and uncluttered.”
A forward VIP cabin further contains its own

ensuite head and shower, as does the starboard
twin guest stateroom, and there is an optional
fourth bunk cabin on port, bringing overnight
berths to eight.
On the main deck, Vicem has made the most
of space afforded by a generous 5.3-metre beam
with a welcoming open plan living area that
sweeps from the helm, past the galley and central
saloon seating area to an outdoor dining zone.
This aft deck benefits from lounges on
two sides, around a gloss teak table, with a
walkthrough to the swimplatform on starboard.
Australian customers will likely opt for a bimini
extension to protect this entertaining area from
the harsh sun.
In a nod to Turkish shipbuilding traditions,
the 65 Classic features solid cold-molded
construction, blending sustainably-sourced
Mahogany with West Systems epoxy on the hull,
decks and superstructure.
Sales director Noelle Semmes said Mahogany
offered a superior weight-to-strength ratio, while
also reducing sound and temperature levels.
“Because this construction uses a lot less
epoxy, our hull is much lighter and not as stiff as
a fiberglass one, which means these yachts do not
pound and rebound over the waves but rather,
glide right through them.”
The Classic 65 comes with twin 800
horsepower Volvo Penta diesels IPS drives as
standard, offering cruise speeds of around 23
knots and wide-open speeds in the range of 26
knots, with a range of around 420 nautical miles
from its 4,500-litre tank.
However IPS drive upgrades to Volvo 1200
(900hp) or Volvo 1350 (1000hp) are also
available for those who desire their Vicem with a
little more vroom-vroom.
