Practical Boat Owner – September 2019

(singke) #1
Efforts are underway to halt the
decline in boatbuilding skills in
Scotland. The Scottish
Maritime Museum’s Scottish
Boat Building School has just
recruited the fi rst apprentice on
Scotland’s Modern
Apprenticeship in Boat
Building and Repair, which
started in March.

Edel McCarthy, 22, from
Paisley (pictured above) will
learn traditional and modern
boatbuilding skills over the
next three years. The modern
apprenticeship aims to stem
the growing skills shortage in
Scotland as an ageing marine
workforce retires with few
qualifi ed replacements.

A new 35m pontoon has opened at Riverside on the River Forth,
providing free mooring to sailors who want to visit Stirling.
Those wanting to use the facility have to book online 24 hours
in advance and will receive the access code for the pontoon
gate via email. The pontoon, which is accessible at high tide, is
around 10 minutes from the city centre. A 5m section is
available for kayakers and rowers. stirling.gov.uk/pontoon

named the new manager at
Premier’s Chichester Marina.

Lymington area and spent 25

Rutland SC’s annual
charity Night Sail saw 13
boats taking part, helping
to raise over £1,500 for the
RNLI, Ellen MacArthur
Cancer Trust and GAIN,
which helps people with

Work is continuing on a new
250-berth marina for Dover.
The development is being built
as part of the port’s Western
Docks revival programme.
The new facility, which will
offer all-tide access, is located
in the outer harbour and will
connect to Wellington Dock
Marina via a 120m navigation

channel and lock system. This
will give 24 hour access to
Wellington Dock. A marina
offi ce and fuelling facilities for
red and white diesel and petrol
are also included in the plans.
The new berths range in
length from 10m-18m and will
all have access to water,
electricity and lighting.

Ayr-based Prestwick SC has
won Sunsail’s Funding the
Future competition for
2018/19. The club will be
spending the £5,000 prize
money on two additional
Hartley 12 dinghies and its
Women on the Water initiative
to increase participation
among female sailors. It also
won a live Q&A with Volvo
Ocean Race winner and RYA
Director of Racing, Ian Walker
MBE.
Banbury SC and Arnside SC
were the runners up.
