Practical Boat Owner – September 2019

QWho can resist a good
‘dreams DO come true’
story? In a recent episode of
WhiteSpotPirates, Nike
Steiger celebrates her new
shellback status after having
crossed the equator on Karl,
her Reinke Super 10. It’s not
exactly the circumstances
she envisioned, as it
happens on a passage just
off the coast of Ecuador
rather than to the Galapagos
and beyond, but she’s done
it solo on her own boat. If
you’ve followed her story
you’ll know that it’s taken a
huge amount of graft and
faith for her to reach this
milestone, so she can be
forgiven for getting a bit
emotional. Brava Nike!

QMeanwhile, on this side of
the pond, a couple of boat
repair channels inspired by
Leo on Sampson Boat Co
pause for some racing
action. Rhys Walters on
Sailing Yacht Zora is in the
fi nal stages of the interior fi t
out, installing and painting
wood paneling after having

insulated the steel hull with
spray foam. Thrilling viewing
for many I’m sure, but I was
relieved to see him take a
break to watch the Solitaire
Urgo le Figaro fl eet of new
Beneteau Figaro 3s start the
next leg of this gruelling solo
race after a stopover in
Kinsale. Sometimes, an event
like this is just the kind of
encouragement needed at
the end of a long refi t.

QIndeed, Steve Jones on
Round and Square Boats has
gone a step further, putting
the refi t of his 1961 wooden
Folkboat on hold to take part
in a Rolex Fastnet Race
campaign on board his friend
Paul Moxon’s 1939 classic
Fred Shepherd designed
yawl Amokura. This episode
shows them competing in a
275-mile qualifying race from
Dun Laoghaire to Dingle.
Highlights include them
using a screwdriver to
MacGyver a clutch for their
broken autopilot and then
completing the last 50 miles
without the upper spreaders.

Martin Bradford sent in this photo of his

says: “Louis can swim very well, but we
prefer him to wear his lifejacket if there
is any current.”

John Hay
aboard
Gallivanter of
Bute in the
Ionian

That’s my boat!

I was very interested by the
fi rst article on the letters page
(PBO Summer 2019): ‘Mystery
yacht of the Ionian’. Could she
be the same Peters 36 that
was previously called
Gallivanter of Bute? If so, she
arrived in the Ionian around

  1. I had a share in her from
1993 to 2006. It was mainly
    Scots owners from Troon
    Cruising Club on the Clyde.

Gallivanter of Bute, as she
was once known, is indeed a
very pretty yacht. But I have to
disappoint anyone wishing to
purchase a 1/3rd share: she is
no longer available, as I
bought her outright. I can
timestamp Dr Barr’s photo
(left) almost exactly by what
work has been done and what
has not: it must have been
taken when I was either below
or over the road. It’s a shame I
wasn’t able to give Dr Barr the
penny tour myself, but then I
wouldn’t have a great photo in
PBO to brag about.
