In terms of bathing lakes, Carinthia in southern Austria is the
motherlode. The largest lake, the Worthersee, has since 2010
become a meeting place for classic boat owners, especially
lovers of the 6-M International Rule. Between 18 and 19 May,
eight such boats gathered to race in Maria Worth, near Velden
am Worthersee, together with nine other boats of various
types (classic and vintage), totalling the round fi gure of 20
wooden racing yachts.
The epicentre of this event was the Union Yacht Club
Worthersee (est 1886), tirelessly backed by Ingo Hopfgartner, a
boating enthusiast who restores boats and vintage road
vehicles alike, so much so that he owns a number of them
himself. One of his jewels afl oat was the 6-M Onkel Adolph
(September 2018 issue), built in Germany in 1907. Formerly
scheduled in September, this event takes now place in May,
when winds are more likely to blow. Over the two days of
racing, characterised by an unstable breeze often accompanied
by showers, the 6-M Rarahu, prevailed to win overall. In a
friendly and informal atmosphere, with good food and
excellent wine to accompany the two-day event, the BMW-
Denzel Classic Holzboot Regatta 2019 once again confi rmed
that this Alpine setting in Carinthia and its passionate sailors
merited an event of this kind; as evidenced by its constant
growth over the past decade. Bruno Cianci
