Sandboxie is a grea t alternativ e to
Windows Sandbox, which Microsoft
introduced with the Windows 10 May
2019 Update (version 1903). Although
they work in similar ways, the Windows
Sandbox only runs on Windows 10 Pro
and isn’t available in the Home edition
or earlier versions of Windows.
A previousWeb UserGold Award
winner, Sandboxie has alwaysoffered
a feature-limited freeversion but,
as of it s latest releas e (5.31.4),
the full program is now entirely free.
This extremely handy tool prevents
softwarefrom making any changes to
- or taking control of – your operating
system by containingprograms in a
secure, disp osable section (a sandbox)
of your computer’s hard drive. So ftware
runningin this sandbox is allowed to
read datafrom the drive, bu t it can’t
write dataoutside of th e sandbox or
make any changes to Windows. This
makes it ideal for testing programs
you’re not sure about, or have no

Run Sandboxieto open theControl
window. If it doesn’t appear,
right-click thesystem-tray icon and
select ShowWindow. Right-click
Sandbox DefaultBox^1 and open the
Run Sandboxed menu.^2 From here,
you can launch a sandboxed version
of your defaultweb br owser, email
reader, any program, any item from the
Start menu orWindows Explorer.^3

Alternatively, just drag a program
shortcutto the windowto launch it
in a sandbox.You’ll be askedto selecta
sandboxto run it in.To indicate that a
program is beingcontained, its title bar
will show a hash (#) sign^1 and ayellow
border will appear^2 whenyou mo ve
your mouseto the top of its window.

Use the sandboxed software just
as you would normally.When
you’ve finished with the program,
close it and it willvanish from the
sandbox. Alternatively, right-click
the sandbox name and select Delete
Contents.^1 This will clear out
everything, including any accrued junk.

If a download contains malware,
you don’t needto worry because it
won’t be able to spread beyond the
sandbox and can’t harm your computer
in any way. Emptying the sandbox will
