We showyou howto install
Openmediavault on an old PC in our
MiniWorkshop, below.

Go to Openmediavault’s download
page (bit.ly/omvdl485) and click
the 5. 0.5 folder. Click the link
openmediavault_5.0.5-amd64.isoand
save the file (it’s a 551MB download).
Open balenaEtcher, click ‘Select image’

(^1) and navigate to the sa ved ISO. Click
‘Select target’,^2 chooseyour USB
memorystick and click Flash.^3

When tha t’s done, disconnectyour
flash drive, plug it into the PCyou’re
using as a server and boot from it.The
Openmediavault boot menu loads.
Select Installto launch the setup
process. Selectyour language, location
and keyboard language. Choose the
network adapterto use if prompted.
Name your server.^1

Enter a password twice, then select
the drive where theOS will be
installed.The storage isformatted and
the installationcontinues.When it ’s
finished, select a mirror of the Debian
package archive.^1 It installs the boot
loader as the finalstep. Unplugyour
USB memorystick andreboot.
Manage yourstorage and
share folders
Click Disksto see theavailable hard
drives.We have two – ‘/dev/sda’ (which
contains thesystem) and ‘/dev/sdb’
(whichwe’ll usefor our data). Select the
data drive and clickWipe. You can
choose between Quick and Secure wipes
but the latter takes significantly longerto
complete. Next, click FileSystem, then
Create. Select the driveyou just wiped
under Device, give it a name and choose
a filesystem. The default – EXT4 – should
be fine. Click OK andYes, thenwait while
it prepares the drive. Click Close, select
the drive and click Mount.
UnderAccess Rights Management,
click User, thenAdd, and create a user.
Under Groups,you can choose which
optionsyou want. These includeAudio,
Games,SSH andVideo. Click Save and
apply the changesby clicking the button
in theyellow barat the top.
Next, click SharedFolders, thenAdd.
Create somefoldersfor your content (for
audio and video files,for example), then
click SMB/CIFS on the left, making sure
the Workgroup iscorrectfor your
During installation you’ll see a lotof text. Don’tworry,
you don’t needto read it!

First steps with
Openmediavault
Onceyou’ve installed Openmediavault,
boot into the operating system and, when
prompted, log in asroot. Type in the
password you created earlier(see Step 3
of our MiniWorkshop, below) and, once
you’re logged in, typeapt updateand
press Enter.This updates the software
listsfor your server. Next, typeapt
upgradeand press Enter
to install anyfound updates.
TypeY(forYes) when asked
if you want to continue, and
the updates will be installed.
To finaliseeverything,
click OK, then enter the
followingcommand:
omv-confdbadm
populate
Enter theip addr
commandto get the IP
address.You will need thisto
log into theweb interface.

Add thefolders thatcontainyour data through the Shares section
