generation of helpers — as
shown by the processes the FEI
are introducing regarding the
appointment of senior offi cials.
“With over 1,000 people
required on cross-country day,
it is always a diffi cult balance.
We need to work with reasonable
guidelines rather than on a case-
by-case basis and are extremely
grateful to all our volunteers.”

READ THE SIGNS
I HAVE owned my two six-year-
olds from yearlings, both of whom
have been well cared for and
never treated in a stressful way.
However, as they progressed in
their training, one started to buck
under saddle and on the lunge and
the other would stop short after
jumping cross-poles and try to
buck his jockey off.
Having had physio, vet checks
and X-rays for their back and
stifl e, a yard manager suggested
stomach ulcers. She was right, so
both horses are being treated for
them now.
Therefore, if you have a
horse that’s a bit cold backed or
stubborn to jump, don’t assume
he’s reacting to us using our whip
or spurs — he could be reacting to
the pain caused by ulcers.

ARE YOU BEING AGEIST?

IT was with great interest that I
read Pammy Hutton’s comments
about 80 being the new 60
(opinion, 25 July). The organisers
of the stewarding at Burghley
might like to consider this.
Last year, after stewarding
crossings for many years and
providing volunteers — and as we
reached 70 years of age — we were
considered too gaga to be able to
do this task, despite being able to
BE fence judge, dressage judge
and run our own company.
I believe that it was possibly
an insurance decision, but I feel it
was defi nitely ageist.

WELL said Pammy Hutton
(opinion, 25 July) on
highlighting Linda Whetstone’s
re-election as BD chair. Her
comparisons of old versus
young are canny indeed — and
the wisdom and experience
passed from the mature to the
young rider is vital.
To be still riding and
competing at the top end of
my 60s is a bonus indeed. To
be out there with beautiful
horses and talented riders is
awe-inspiring, and
the age gap seems
insignifi cant.
I am also amazed
at the example of
one of my childhood

heroines, Anneli
Drummond-Hay,
who has just
turned 82 and is
still showjumping
— what an
incredible lady.
Pammy, that
makes you but
a girl, so I hope
your floorplan
was spot on when
you rode down
the centre line at
Hickstead CDI and
that you proved
your valid point.
Well done.
