Double V

Sleeping Mat
WRITTEN BY ~ GREG DULEY

Sleeping mats are one of the most important

pieces of equipment to allow you to get a good

night’s sleep

That then allows you to perform at your best, and therefore enjoy
your time in the hills Add your better half into the equation, and
then it’s even more important she gets a good night’s sleep!

If you have a double sleeping bag, or zip
your bags together, trying to sleep side by
side on two of the latest mummy shaped
ultralight air mattresses is not the most
comfortable way to spend the night.
One of you is going to end up lying in
the hole in the middle for sure. You are
better off with the rectangular shaped
air mattresses in this situation, and some
manufacturers have come up with various
ways to strap them together to minimise
the hole in the middle syndrome. Then
of course the obvious no-brainer was
a double sleeping mat. Recently we
received a Klymit Double V sleeping mat
for review from Neil at Outfitters, the RAB
distributor.
Klymit make a range of outdoor
gear, including packs, tents and
sleeping bags; but high tech sleeping
mats was where they began. The
most noticeably different thing about
their mats is the zig-zagging V baffle
construction. This not only helps stop
you rolling off the mat, it also allows your
sleeping bag to loft into the deep welds
between the baffles, to make the most of
your sleeping bag’s insulation. Klymit do
what they call body mapping to identify
all the pressure points and their baffle
layout is designed to keep you centred
and comfortable on the mat - no matter
whether you sleep on your side, stomach

or back. They incorporate a lightweight,
compressible and durable synthetic
insulation, and an antimicrobial laminate
to inhibit fungus and bacterial growth
and maximise the life of the mat. They
have flush fitting valves, with both a
no-return inflation and a deflation
valve, making inflation a doddle. The
models they call “Insulated” have separate
air chambers for top and bottom, keeping
the warmer air against your body and
providing a higher R rating. They also
make a standard model without the
extra chamber that is 400gms lighter. The
Double mats come with storage/cram
sacks that double as the inflation bag - a
system that works really well.
Fiona and I took the Double V on a big
walk-about winter Red stag hunting
trip, where we fly camped our way
around the tops of the Southern Alps.
Without a doubt, the Double V is the
most comfortable yet still portable
sleeping mat we’ve ever used. It
completely filled the floor space of the
two man tent, meaning you could roll
anywhere and not come off it, and at 3
inches thick with an R value of 4.4, it was
superbly warm and comfortable. The
whole tent was warmer too with the
entire floor being insulated. Weighing
1600gms, this is certainly about 600gms
more than our lightest weight, 2 x single

mats of similar warmth, but it was pretty
hard to argue with the extra comfort.
Both of us felt the wonderful night’s sleep
on those long winter nights was worth
the extra weight – well Fi did as I was
carrying it! We always zip our sleeping
bags together as that always feels
warmer too, although I’m not sure on the
science behind that. I’m actually going to
investigate getting a quilt type sleeping
bag made up that works with the double
sleeping mats as you don’t need down
underneath you. This should weigh
only a little more than a single
sleeping bag for a similar warmth
rating – therefore knocking a kilo off the
combined weight which will then put
us back down at our previous lightest 2
person sleeping system weight - but with
considerably more comfort. We feel there
would be plenty of transalpine hunters
and trampers interested in saving weight
who would use a system like this to save
carrying a sleeping bag each. You’re all
fully clothed jammed together side-by-
side in a tent anyway, so doesn’t much
matter if you’re under the same sleeping
quilt!
