In 1932, Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada, became the
first ice hockey arena to use a four-sided game clock.

All records relate to the National Hockey League (NHL)
contested in the USA and Canada. All teams and
players are USA, unless otherwise indicated.


Fastest four goals
On 3 Apr 2015, the St Louis Blues and the Dallas
Stars combined to score four goals in 49 sec
during a game in Dallas, Texas, USA. The goal
glut broke the 1983 record of 53 sec, which had
been set by the Toronto Maple Leafs (CAN) and
the Chicago Blackhawks.
In the same game, the teams scored three goals
in 38 sec from the start of the second period –
the fastest three goals by both teams from
the start of a period. Final score: 7–5 to St Louis.


Shortest time between goals
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno
and Minnesota Wild forward Mikael Granlund
(FIN) scored just 2 sec apart in a game
played in Columbus, Ohio, USA, on 5 Jan

The Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders
scored nine straight goals to open a shootout
in Sunrise, Florida, USA, on 27 Nov 2015. The
10th shooter missed for the Islanders, and the
Panthers emerged with the win.
Eight games on 27 Nov 2015 ended in
overtime or a shootout, tying the most
overtime games in one day,
previously set on 22 Feb 2007.


Most hits by a player in one season
Hits are an aggressive defensive manoeuvre
in which players use their bodies to separate
an opposing player from the puck. Matt Martin
(CAN) made 382 hits for the New York Islanders
during the 2014–15 season. He broke his own
record of 374, set during 2011–12.

Most penalty minutes in a playoff game
Deryk Engelland accrued 42 penalty min for
the Calgary Flames against the Vancouver
Canucks (all CAN) in a Stanley Cup playoff
match on 17 Apr 2015. He matched the mark set
by Dave “The Hammer” Schultz (CAN) for the
Philadelphia Flyers against the Toronto Maple
Leafs (CAN) on 22 Apr 1976.

Most overtime goals in
a regular-season career
Alex Ovechkin (RUS) scored his 19th regular-
season game-winning goal during overtime,
playing for the Washington Capitals in a 6–5 win
over the Toronto Maple Leafs (CAN) on 3 Jan

The Edmonton Oilers (CAN) missed
the playoffs for a 10th consecutive year
following the 2015–16 season. The only
other team to miss the playoffs for 10 years
in a row was the Florida Panthers in 2002–11.

PATRICK KANE
The Chicago Blackhawks’
Patrick Kane (b. 19 Nov 1988)
had a 2015–16 season to remember.
He scored in 26 consecutive matches
and became the first US-born player
to win the Hart Memorial Trophy
since its inception in 1923–24.
Kane is also the youngest player
to score a Stanley Cup-winning
goal in overtime. He found the
net against the Philadelphia Flyers
in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup aged
21 years 202 days on 9 Jun 2010.

MOST GOALS SCORED ON DEBUT
Auston Matthews scored four goals in his first
career game while playing for the Toronto Maple
Leafs during a 5–4 loss to the Ottawa Senators
(both CAN) in Ottawa on 12 Oct 2016.

MOST CONSECUTIVE GAME WINS
FOR A GOALTENDER TO START A SEASON
With a 5–0 win against the Detroit Red Wings
on 12 Nov 2016, Carey Price of the Montreal
Canadiens (both CAN) became the first NHL
goalie to win his first 10 games of a season.

on NHL debut.

YOUNGEST CAPTAIN OF A TEAM
Connor McDavid (b. 13 Jan 1997) was named
captain of the Edmonton Oilers (both CAN) aged
19 years 266 days on 5 Oct 2016. McDavid was
20 days younger than Gabriel Landeskog (SWE,
b. 23 Nov 1992) had been when he was named
as captain of the Colorado Avalanche in 2012.
