t 30 years of age a crossroads lay
before me. To the right my conventional
life. The left my dreams. Like a strong
headwind, the Great Recession, in
2009, set me free. Swept from a career in the
i nancial markets. Coupled with the loss of my
best friend Ben, I formed a plan: honor Ben’s death
by making his camera live again! So it came to
pass I began a new career as a photographer. The
wildlands became my stock. The ups and downs,
my adventure. Nowadays, when any destination is a
potential port of call, my eyes become the compass
and my RV takes me there. The road isn’t so much
a state of mind as a way of life. As a photographer,
I now have an oi ce that lives the lifestyle I do.
No more traveling from the mountains to home
to process images, no more sleeping in a car that
always seemed two inches shorter than I am and
no more midnight drives to faraway trailheads. My
home comes with me, and whenever I am done
adventuring, there it is. — Jason Hummel
