Synoptic situation
A broad ridge of high pressure
will extend from the Atlantic
across Britain and Ireland
and bring a spell of settled
conditions. Low pressure to
the northwest near Iceland
will push a warm front across
northern Scotland with
associated cloud and showery
rain in those areas. A tighter
pressure gradient will bring
breezier conditions there.

T
oday marks a curious
feature of the British
weather. June 13 is the only
date in the whole of the
month when the
temperature has never reached 30C
or more anywhere in the UK, in
weather archives going back to the
19th century. It is also the only date
in the entire summer that has never
reached 30C or more.
In fact, the temperature on June
13 has never even come close to
breaking this benchmark of hot
weather. The highest temperature
recorded for June 13 was 28.3C, on
three separate occasions: in Brixton,
south London, in 1896, Earls Colne,
Essex, in 1948, and Aboyne, in the
Highlands, in 1994.
The question is why this particular
date is so reluctant to get to 30C?
One possible explanation may be
that it happens more or less during
the middle of the northwest
European monsoon, when clouds
and rain often send temperatures
plunging in the UK. More likely,
though, this is just a quirk of
statistics and eventually the 30C
anomaly will be broken on June 13.
Today looks unlikely to get
anywhere near 30C as cooler air
sweeps in from the Atlantic. There
are, however, signs of hotter weather
on the horizon, with headlines in
many news media about an
imminent heatwave roasting the
UK. What is clear is that a fierce
heatwave has built up in Spain,
where 41.6C was recorded in Seville
on Saturday, and it is growing even
hotter this week. The heat is also
building in France with 30C or more
widespread this week.
As high pressure builds over the
UK, some of that heat from the
Continent will be pulled up in a
plume of hot air. The highest
temperatures are expected across
southern areas of Britain, quite
likely reaching the 30C mark. Yet
there is uncertainty about how
much of that heat will arrive in
Britain, how far north in the
country it will reach and how long
it will last. Added to that is the
threat of thunderstorms triggered by
the hot and humid plume of
continental air.
