It was not only at Trent Bridge where a
Yorkshireman was to the fore. Harry
Brook was released by England on the
first day of the second Test match to go,
initially, to Birmingham, although he
was not required to bat for his county in
the T20 Blast that evening, and thence
to the south coast, where he continued
his wonderful run of form this season.
Brook reached a half-century for the
ninth time in ten innings. It is his sev-
enth championship match of the season
and, to put it into context, no batsman
from any county exceeded such consist-
ency last year. He scored his runs yes-
terday in good time, his first 50 coming
off 68 balls with six fours and a straight
six when Liam Dawson came on.
He was down the pitch on that occa-
sion and Dawson was soon pulled out of
the attack. When the medium-paced

In contests between the leading six title
contenders this season, stalemate has
usually resulted. With flat pitches, balls
going soft and eight points for a draw,
only three such games have produced
a winner.
Despite more runs for Warwickshire
from Sam Hain, however, this match
has the makings of genuine combat
between bat and ball. Hain, in fine fettle
from the off as befits a man with a
double-century and a hundred in his
previous three championship innings,
added 130 until he was last out.
Alex Davies sent a leading edge to
mid-off and Rob Yates, in form as
wretched this year as it was prolific last,
played on for a duck driving at a wide
one. Dom Sibley was also undone by a
lavish shot and the Lancashire seam
bowler Will Williams struck with a
beauty when Will Rhodes went for 23.
Mike Burgess outscored Hain in
adding 67 but when driving too soon he
sliced Matt Parkinson to cover, and the
tail soon succumbed.

Sport

Brook continues

rich vein of form

Ian Holland returned at the same
Northern End — or Meon Valley End,
as Christopher Martin-Jenkins used to
call it — Brook was no less quick on his
feet, advancing to drive to the mid-
wicket boundary. He had made 76 off 95
balls, with ten fours, when he was caught
at leg slip, flicking at James Fuller.
George Hill, whom Yorkshire also
rate highly, put on 141 with Brook,
reaching his second century of the
season. He also straight away struck
Dawson for six. How Hampshire
missed Mohammad Abbas, who is
expected back for the championship
run-in. There was less movement than
is normally the case early on the opening
day and by early afternoon the attack
looked no more than serviceable.
Hill had commenced his innings by
straight driving Kyle Abbott for two
fours in a row. Adam Lyth, his opening
partner, was caught in the gully, driving
at Holland, and Will Fraine was un-
luckily run out at the non-striker’s end
when a firm drive by Hill was deflected
by Keith Barker on to the stumps. Hill’s
concentration did not waver until the
persevering Abbott bowled him
through the gate. He made 131 off 257
balls, including 21 fours and two sixes.
