Joe Root scored the fastest of his
27 Test hundreds yesterday after
joining in the celebrations that
followed his team-mate Ollie Pope
reaching his second Test century.
The pair shared a stand of 187 as
England gorged on runs at Trent
Bridge, scoring 383 in a day to go
within 80 runs of New Zealand’s
first-innings total with five wickets,
including Root’s, intact.
Pope, who has struggled to
convert his batting talent into big
innings for England, scored 145
and was embraced by Root after
reaching his hundred. “I’ve never
doubted that my game is there for
Test cricket, but I’ve used this time
since my debut as a huge bank of
knowledge,” Pope said. “It has not
been the easiest ride over the past
year or so, a few tough tours
away and I didn’t play a
massive amount last summer.
Once I got over the line, it
was a relief, but I was just
so happy. You have to take
in those moments, which
is something I’ve come to
realise over the past
couple of years.”
Before yesterday Pope
and Root had not spent much
time in the middle together

Lewis Hamilton may be forced to miss
Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix after
suffering excruciating back pain caused
by his bouncing car during yesterday’s
race in Baku.
Hamilton, who admitted that he had
been “praying” for the Azerbaijan
Grand Prix to end, struggled to get out
of his car after finishing fourth and was
seen clutching his lower back as he re-
turned to the Mercedes garage.
Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team prin-
cipal, apologised to Hamilton over the
team radio towards the end of the race.
“Lewis, we all know this is a bit of a shit-
box to drive and sorry for the back,” he
said. “We will sort ourselves out.”
Revealing the extent of Hamilton’s
problem, Wolff said he would consider
using a reserve driver in Montreal if the
seven-times world champion was still

Danny Care has been recalled to the
England squad after four years in inter-
national exile. The Harlequins scrum
half linked up with England yesterday
to begin preparations for Sunday’s non-
cap match against the Barbarians at
Twickenham.
Care had accepted an invitation to
turn out for the Barbarians in the
festival game and was prepared to fly to
their training camp in Monaco when
the call came from England.
The 35-year-old has not represented
his country since earning his 84th cap
in an unconvincing victory over Japan
in November 2018, after which there
was a frank exchange of views with
Eddie Jones, the head coach.
Care’s international career appeared
to be over but his form for Harlequins
