Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve

numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
three or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

“Nice lead,” said declarer to West
on today’s deal from the World
Bridge Tour Champions Cup.
It was true. There is little point in
West leading a heart. Given partner
would have raised 3♥ to 4♥ with
three hearts, the (ten-card) level of
the fit, it is hard to construct a heart
layout where the heart lead works
well. If you are not leading a heart,
it is normal to try the other major.
If the opponents had a spade fit,
they may have bid differently and
played in 4♠ not 3NT. East is
marked with spades.
Declarer elected to duck West’s
nine of spades completely. He won
West’s second spade with the
queen and, needing an extra trick,
at trick three led the nine of clubs,
covered by the ten, queen and king.
East led a third spade to declarer’s
ace, West discarding a heart.
With East holding two winning
spades, declarer now tried a club to
the ace, to minimise the chances of
East winning the lead (should he
have started with ♣KJ doubleton).
No king fell and he led a third club,
hoping West, the safe hand, held
his majesty. It was not to be —
East won the king and cashed his
two long spades. One down.
Declarer felt he had optimised
— taking that extra chance of try-
ing to drop East’s king of clubs. But
he had not.
You should win the nine of
spades opening lead with the
queen — don’t duck and lose your
third spade exit card. By all means
try the nine of clubs at trick two,
covered by the ten, queen and
king. But win East’s king of spades
return with the ace.

Now cash four diamonds. When
East turns up with four, you can
count East to be 5♠ 1 ♥ 4 ♦ 3 ♣.
Next cash the ace of hearts, cru-
cially removing East’s safe heart
exit, then throw East in with the
third spade. Let East cash three
spades for, at trick 12, he must lead
from his remaining ♣J6 round to
dummy’s ♣A8. Game made.
Indeed, there is no need to play
a club at trick two. After winning
the queen of spades, simply cash all
your top tricks outside clubs then
exit with a third spade. At trick 11,
East will have to lead from ♣KJ6
round to dummy’s ♣AQ8.
Note, you can succeed even after
the unnecessary spade duck. Win
the second spade, cash all your top
tricks and run the nine of clubs
(ten, queen, king); East must give
dummy two club tricks at the end.
What you can’t do is both duck the
spade and play an early club.
