Motor Boat & Yachting – September 2019

(Nandana) #1

I have to admit that you had me
stumped for a while but a bit of
investigative work reveals that it’s a
one-off built by the boss of a furniture
company. It’s based on the hull of a
Colvic Sunquest 44 with an updated
superstructure and a new three-cabin
interior designed and built by the owner.
It has an air draught of only 11ft 4in so
that it can explore the waterways of
England and France and is powered by
twin 435hp Volvo D6 engines with an
electrical system from Energy Solutions.
It took him four years to complete but
the end result, launched in 2015, looks
remarkably fresh and modern. In fact it
sounds such an interesting project I plan
to take a closer look for a feature in MBY.
Thanks for the tip off. Hugo

FUEL FOR THOUGHT
Yet again I read about someone in
your magazine who normally motors
at between 8-10 knots to conserve
IXHO,bWKLQNLIWKH\VDZWKHDWWDFKHG
graph (below) they would see that
consumption between these two speeds
almost doubles in a boat of less than
50ft. Not only this, but they might as
well be travelling at 20 knots since
it won’t cost them any more.

The graph shows exactly what
happens to the fuel consumption of our
Broom 42 – it goes up steeply until the
ERDWLVRQWKHSODQH,WWKHQŴDWWHQVRXW
and remains about the same until it
increases again at much higher speeds.
Why can’t MBY show such graphs
in its boat reviews which would make
it immediately obvious whether there
is indeed a ‘sweet spot’ in a boat’s
performance? Also, I have never
understood why fuel consumption is
expressed in miles per gallon. Since
when have we measured fuel in gallons?
Andrew Smyth
I’m not sure which article you are referring
to but I take your point that the natural
hull speed of most boats under 50ft
means that as soon as you start to exceed
7 or 8 knots you are effectively pushing a
lot of water in semi-displacement mode
XQWLOLWƓQDOO\RYHUWDNHVLWVERZZDYH
and starts to plane. As for expressing
fuel consumption in mpg, we largely
gave that up in 2018 replacing it with
\RXURZQSUHIHUUHG/30ƓJXUH7KHVH
form part of our performance tables
(at intervals of 200-500rpm depending
on the engines) so you can see for
\RXUVHOIbKRZHIƓFLHQWLWLVDWYDULRXV
speeds. Hugo

The FabriTec F44 spotted by Chris
Collins on the Thames is a one-off DIY
project, albeit an extremely slick one,
based on a Colvic Sunquest hull

The graph of Andrew
Smyth’s Broom 42
shows how fuel
consumption soars
above 8 knots
