Thank goodness for TV

Neighbour Jan’s warning
to me some days ago that I
shouldn’t get too optimistic
about our weather warming
up turned out to be prophetic.
In no time at all, a new cold
front hit us with a vengeance.
Never since I’ve lived on
the farm has it been so cold.
Our temperature reached
a daytime high of just 5°C,
and plummeted to an arctic
-8°C at night! Even with a
fire roaring in the grate, a gas
heater on full bore, and extra
layers of warm clothing, we
still struggled to warm up.
In desperation, we went to bed
under a down duvet, wearing
long johns, socks and woollen
beanies! The sky was leaden,
threatening rain, but this
never happened. Had it done
so, I’m sure we would have
woken up to snow. TV weather
coverage showed snow all
over the Eastern Cape. Forget
global warming; it was as
if an ice age had hit us!

Jan became worried about
his sheep and lambs. After
we had a steaming cup
of coffee on my stoep, we
went to check up on them.
Miraculously, there were no
fatalities amongst the lambs.
Let’s hope we’ve seen
the worst of the weather;
but I’m not taking bets,
especially with Jan!

Iplayed golf just about every
weekend. But with our nearest
course now 80km away, I
reluctantly gave up the sport.
So I can’t resist watching it
on TV, especially when a
major championship is being
played. The fourth and final
round of the British Open at
Royal Portrush in Northern
Ireland kept me glued to my
set in the freezing weather.
With six South Africans,
including Ernie Els, in the
field, local interest was high.
Sadly, they were outclassed

by their star-studded
international competitors.
Irishman Shane Lowry,
cheered on wildly by
local Irish spectators, won
convincingly with a score
of -15. Tommy Fleetwood of
England came second at -9.

the last nine holes in pouring
rain and blustery conditions.
