thisbehemoth,uponroundingtheheadlandafter
aquickRIBridefromthefamousBlueMarlin
beachbar,myjawactuallydrops.Withstealth-
greypaintworklightenedbyavibrantorange
stripe,shecouldeasilybemistakenforawarship
readytosteamintobattle–wereitnotforthe
colour-matchedAirbusH145helicopterand
similarlyliveriedandconspicuouslylargetenders
dottedabouttheupperdeck.
“Theideawastogetalltheclutteroffthe
mothershipandonboardadedicatedvessel–and
theIncatCrowthercatamaranplatformprovided
theperfectanswer,”saysHodor’sfirstofficer,Troy
Eriksson,afterwelcomingmeaboard.
AustraliannavalarchitectIncatCrowtheris
better known for designing high-speedcatamaranferriesthanreceptaclesforfunobjects
thatfly,drive,floatanddive,butallthatcould
changewiththecreationofHodor,thefirstofa
newbreedof“shadowcats”designedtomakethe
storage,maintenance,launchandrecoveryof
superyachttoysasefficientaspossible.
BasedonIncatCrowther’sall-aluminium
55-metrefastferryplatform,Hodorwascreated
bystretchingthestandardhullby 11 metresand
thenfittingitouttotheexactspecificationsof
boththeownerandthefull-timecrewof17,who
manageheronaday-to-daybasis.
“Thefactthattheboathastwohullsandis
basedonacommercialvesselmeansthereare
hugeloadareasandstoragespaces,”says
Eriksson,“sotherewasnoneedtorestrictthe
quantityoftoysweputonboard.Theownerjust
letusgoaheadandfillitwithcoolstuff.”
Indeed,thereissomuchcoolstuffaboard
Hodorthatittakesmorethananhourtowalk
