t was during a round of match play
with my buddy John, who was down
to three under par after the front nine,
and 4up against me in matchplay when
he jokingly said his Vice PRO balls were
doped. I asked if I could try one of his
magic marbles, and my fi rst thought after hitting
my next drive was “Wow, I was NOT expecting
that“. Th e ball played amazing off every tee
and around the greens, but I still had to doff
my cap after 17 holes and congratulate him on
his victory. What stayed with me was my fi rst
experience with Vice Golf balls and my mind
was buzzing with so many questions about where
these balls came from, how I was going to get
hold of some, and how much it was going to
cost me... A little bit of online research told me
there were these two guys from Germany who
made golf balls on the premise that premium
golf balls would be considerably cheaper if they
were sold directly through their own website.
No middlemen, no third parties wanting to take
their cut from the sale of a golf ball: Th ey sell
their premium models at $24.95 per dozen only
which I found incredible.
Over the next few days, all I spoke about was Vice
Golf. I was a fanboy; my wife rolled her eyes and
was about to say something snarky when I handed
her a dozen golf balls with our son Charlie’s face
printed on them! I was just trying to win her
over, but it turned out to be like a Hole in One!
For our next wedding anniversary there were
Vice PRO balls printed with our wedding date,

I can remember getting a dozen with a family
portrait for someone’s birthday party. Vice Golf
was becoming a part of our family and the guys
on the golf course kept bugging me to get them
Vice golf balls. It took a while for my buddies
to catch on that I wasn’t the only person who
could visit vicegolf.com and that they would ship
internationally very quickly. As I saw more and
more personalized Vice golf balls at my club with
all kinds of logos, I knew I’d started something!
Our team became the Vice Team, equipped with
Vice caps, towels, bags, balls, you name it... and
when someone came into the clubhouse locker
room with a Vice backpack, I couldn’t help but
shake my head and laugh.
Th ese German guys have created something we
all can identify with: a brand, a feeling that is
diff erent, that cannot be described better than
“Vice”. If you look more closely at the brand, it‘s
fair to say that the press articles and awards are

piling up, and I‘m incredibly proud to be part
of it and say: ”Premium golf balls don’t have to
be expensive.” Having balls that I can print with
virtually any old nonsense, to use them myself
or to give as gifts, is way more brilliant than the
price and always brings a big smile to my face.
