Shorthanded MOBs
The majority of cruisers sail with a small
crew, and usually it is just two people, with
one of you more experienced than the other.
What if the experienced skipper fell
overboard, leaving the lone crew to effect
a rescue? I have drawn up an appropriate
sequence of events to redeem a potentially
disastrous situation. Anyone who has lost a
hat overboard will know how quickly it
disappears. Not losing sight of an MOB is the
most important initial action.
Actions to be taken (in order of importance):

  1. Immediately stop the boat and deploy a
surface marker such as a Dan buoy. If sailing,
the quickest way to do that is to turn the
boat through the wind until hove to.

  2. If not already motoring, start the engine
then lower the mainsail and furl the jib.
    Check for ropes overboard.

  3. Keeping watch on the casualty (or marker
buoy) bring the boat round under motor
close to and within sight of the casualty,
preferably upwind, then put the engine
    into neutral.
    4. Throw a floating line or MOB rescue sling
to casualty and if possible bring him or her
    near the boat.
    5. Activate Mayday on VHF. As the situation
is a bit more under control now is the time
to take your eyes off the casualty and call
for help, preferably using the ship’s VHF
    rather than a handheld one.
    6. Attempt to recover the casualty into the
boat. If the above has been done with
speed and efficiency then, assuming the
casualty is not unconscious, they will only
have been in the water for a few minutes
and may be able to climb the boarding
ladder by themselves or with some
assistance. Otherwise use one of the
    various recovery devices, although many
of these require quite a lot of technical
rigging which may be beyond the ability of
    the lone crew left aboard.
    7. If successful cancel the Mayday.
    Peter Kersey

This is a subject we are going to be tackling
in the magazine in an upcoming issue.

The theory for a man overboard may
work with a full crew, but would your
plan work with just two on board?
