With a 15m tidal range it is essential
you plan your navigation in the Upper
Bristol Channel carefully.
The channel into Cardiff is well
marked by buoys but gives priority to
ships entering and leaving the docks.
Approaching from the south, look out
for the RANIE buoy which marks the
rocks and sand spit off Lavernock
Point, and South Cardiff S cardinal
Buoy which marks the southern edge
of the Cardiff Grounds. Once
between the two, plot a course for
the Outer Wrach W cardinal buoy and
then the buoyed minor channel into
Cardiff Bay Outer Harbour. On the
final approach contact Barrage
Control on VHF Ch18 to be advised
on the next available lock.
For Portishead keep to the south
side of the shipping channel well
inshore and give priority to shipping.
Beware Firefly rock (0.9m) and
reverse eddy near Portishead
Pierhead on the flood. There is a
waiting pontoon for the lock. Call the
marina on Ch80.
Book ahead for a visit to Bristol
Harbour (0117 927 3633). For entry to
the River Avon head up close to the
pier head light at Avonmouth and turn
to starboard to enter the river. It is a
winding channel up the river to the
lock, the suspension bridge giving
ample warning of
your arrival.
Use low power
VHF to make
contact with the
City Docks Radio
on Channel 14
when you are on
your way up the
Severn Estuary.
Both Bristol Harbour (0117 9031484,
VHF Ch. 73, http://www.bristol.gov.uk and
Cardiff Harbour Authorities (02920
877900, VHF Ch, 68, http://www.
cardiffharbour.com) provide details of
navigation and procedures.
