Jeremiah 21-36 A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary by (Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries)

Speaking of Prophets (23:9-40) 221

These two discourses are probably to be dated to the reign of Zedekiah,
though not necessarily during the final siege, which is when Volz dates v 33.
They seem to reflect Jeremiah's conflict with the "peace" prophets early in
Zedekiah's reign, i.e., 597-594 B.C. Nothing here emanates from the postexilic
period, when the conflict and fuss about what precise language to use would be
in the ddant past. When the present words are heard after the divine words im-
mediately preceding, the audience will perceive two polemics in tandem: one
against lying dreams and one against the tired phrase "the burden of Yahweh."
