16 Jeremiah 21-36: A Translation

speaking everything that Yahweh commancied him to speak to all the people,
the priests and the prophets and all the people then laid hold of him, saying,
'You shall surely die!^9 Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh say-
ing, Like Shiloh this house shall become, and this city will dry up without in-
habitant?' And all the people crowded up to Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh.

(^10) And the princes of Judah heard these things and came up from the house of
the king to the house of Yahweh, and they sat at the entrance of the New Gate
of the house of Yahweh.^11 And the priests and the prophets said to the princes
and to all the people: 'A sentence of death for this man! because he has proph-

evil against ourselves!

of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. And he prophesied against this city and
against this land like all the words of Jeremiah.^21 And King J ehoiakim heard his
words, also all his officers and all the princes, and the king sought to put him to
death. But Uriah heard of it, and he was afraid and fled, and came to Egypt.
