Jeremiah 21-36: A Translation 37

sent-saying: Return, would you, each person from his evil way and make
good your doings and do not go after other gods to serve them and dwell
on the soil that I gave to you and your fathers. But you have not bent your
ear, and you have not listened to me.^16 Indeed the sons of Jonadab son of
Rechab have carried out the command of their father which he com-
manded them, but this people have not listened to me.

(^17) Therefore thus said Yahweh, God of hosts, God of Israel:
Look I am bringing to Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all
the evil that I spoke concerning them, because I have spoken to them
and they have not listened, and I have called to them and they have not
answered.
(^18) But to the house of the Rechabites Jeremiah said, Thus said Yahweh of
hosts, God of Israel: Because you have listened to the command of Jonadab,
your father, and you have kept all his commands and you have done accord-
ing to all that he commanded you,
(^19) Therefore thus said Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel:
There shall not be cut off a man belonging to Jonadab son of Rechab who
stands before me all the days.
C. A Scroll for Future Days (36:1-32)

  1. Baruch and the First Jeremiah Scroll (36:1-8)
36 1 And it happened in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of
Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh:^2 Take for yourself a writing-
scroll, and you shall write on it all the words that I have spoken to you con-
cerning Israel and concerning Judah and concerning all the nations, from the
day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, until this day.^3 Perhaps the house
of Judah will listen to all the evil that I am planning to do to them, in order
that they may tum each person from his evil way, and I will forgive their iniq-
uity and their sin.^4 So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch
wrote from the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh that he had spo-
ken to him upon a writing-scroll.^5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying:
'I am under restraint; I am not able to enter the house of Yahweh.^6 So you,
you shall enter, and you shall read aloud from the roll that you have written
from my dictation the words of Yahweh in the hearing of the people in the
house of Yahweh on a fast day, yes, also in the hearing of all Judah who come
from their cities, you shall read them aloud.^7 Perhaps their petition will be
laid before Yahweh, and they will tum each person from his evil way, for great
is the anger and wrath that Yahweh has spoken toward this people.'^8 And
Baruch son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah, the prophet, com-
manded him, to read aloud the scroll of the words of Yahweh in the house of
    Yahweh.
