Parasites
Parasites such as worms, flukes, and protozoa have been found in peo-
ple with Hashimoto’s, fibromyalgia, and other autoimmune condi-
tions. Although we usually think of parasites as being more common
in developing countries, they are found in Americans, Europeans, and
Australians as well. Dr. Omar Amin, an expert in parasitology, estimates
that one third of Americans have parasitic infections.
He recommends parasite testing for anyone suffering from increased in-
testinal permeability, poor digestion, allergies, fatigue, irritable bowel,
gas, bloating, cramps, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Available parasite tests include blood tests (a specific parasite must be re-
quested), fecal tests that look for eggs or parasites, fecal antigen tests that look
for an immune reaction to some parasites, and endoscopy/colonoscopy, in
which a tube is inserted into the intestines to examine the contents.
A comprehensive stool analysis is the most useful test for finding para-
sites, but oftentimes tests for specific parasites need to be requested as
they are not included in the standard workup. The labs examine the
stools for parasites and signs that they may be present (such as eggs).
There are limitations to the stool test as the parasites may not always be
