Intestinal Tight Junctions
Figure 7: Intestinal epithelial tight junctions (TJs) act as a physical
barrier. The intestinal TJs tightly regulate intestinal permeability.
The barrier impairment allows bacterial products and dietary anti-
gens to cross the epithelium and enter circulation. This can induce
inflammation and immunological reactions in tissues such as the
intestines, resulting in both intestinal and autoimmune diseases.
