The 401H test is the best option for parasite testing. It does not, however,
measure beneficial bacteria.
These tests can be helpful in determining your course of action. I found
that although I had plenty of Bifidobacteria, I had zero lactobacilli! I also
had an overgrowth of E. coli and Proteus vulgaris. Additionally, I was
found to have three different gut infections!
SMALL-INTESTINAL BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH
Small Intestine
The small intestine has millions of tiny mucosal fingerlike projections
called villi that line the intestinal wall. Made from epithelial cells, these
villi are covered with the even smaller microvilli that make up the brush
border cells (“the fuzzy fringe”). These cells contain brush border en-
zymes that digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (amylase, lactase,
maltase, and sucrose). The space between the epithelial cells is called a
tight junction. Under normal conditions, food is transported into the
small intestine, where it is further worked on by brush border enzymes.
