that bypasses the stomach and is absorbed by the small intestine) was
given instead of cow’s milk to children genetically susceptible to devel-
oping IDDM. These children were less likely to develop IDDM by 40
percent as compared with children who had been given cow’s milk.

Children with diabetes were found to have intestinal immune activation—
even if they did not have the HLA DQ2 gene associated with celiac disease.

Avoidance of gluten did not eliminate the intestinal immune activation,
although immune reaction was found when exposed to gluten and dairy.
This leads us to believe intestinal permeability causes an altered response
to food and microflora-derived antigens. In other words, the increased in-
testinal permeability comes first, followed by an altered response to foods.

My Story

I first became gluten-free after having learned about normaliza-
tion of TPO antibodies in some people after eliminating gluten. I
was not one of those people, however. Although I felt much bet-
ter, I continued to have elevated TPO antibodies, despite com-
plete avoidance of gluten, dairy, and soy for almost two years.

I was able to eliminate Candida after about six months of a Can-
dida diet. What especially helped was cutting out fruit and taking
5,000 mcg of biotin, which keeps Candida in its non-infectious
form. Biotin becomes depleted in adrenal insufficiency and
causes hair loss, so it was one supplement that worked overtime
for me, achieving a triple score. But that did not eliminate my
antibodies, either.

So I dug deeper. I ordered additional tests and found out I
had an overgrowth of Proteus vulgaris. I learned Proteus species
bacteria are implicated in autoimmunity and like to eat fructose
and undigested meat. I had been following a leaky gut diet for
about a year but did not see improvement until I made some
tweaks specific to my situation. I cut out fruit and added diges-
tive enzymes and fermented cabbage. I began to experience severe
die-off symptoms within a couple of days, which signaled the
beginning of my healing crisis!
