Proteolytic enzyme supplements (sometimes called “systemic enzymes”)
provide the activated enzymes (protease blends, trypsin, chymotrypsin,
elastase, carboxypeptidase) and should be taken between meals to help
break down circulating immune complexes formed by poorly digested
proteins. They may be helpful in reducing TPO antibodies.

My Story
I was personally shocked to find out I had an IgA dairy
protein (casein) intolerance. I had consumed dairy prod-
ucts two or three times daily for many years. I also had
severe bloating and acid reflux but never connected the
two. I was amazed at how flat my stomach felt and how
my symptoms disappeared after three days of going dairy-
free. If I accidentally have a casein product now, I feel a
burning sensation in my intestines, followed by tingling in
my extremities and painful diarrhea.

CHAPTER SUMMARY

9 Food intolerances are distinct from food allergies and are mediated
by different parts of the immune system (IgG, IgA).

9 Due to increased intestinal permeability, people with Hashimoto’s
also have food intolerances.
