I know lifestyle changes are challenging. It is certainly easier to take a
pill on a daily basis rather than follow diets, reduce stress, and exercise.
However, please consider the following statistic.


Fifty million people in the United States have an autoimmune condition.
That is a whopping 20 percent of our population!


Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.


Thus, our society, medical system, and diet are perfectly designed to
produce 50 million people with autoimmunity. It’s up to you to decide
whether you want to be like everyone else and get stuck with the same
results or try a different approach to your health.


Getting Help


Unfortunately, most traditionally trained medical professionals believe
Synthroid® and the TSH are all there is to managing Hashimoto’s. While
these professionals can get you on the right track with the diagnosis and
sometimes with the medication component of the condition, they may not
be very helpful with lifestyle interventions such as diet and supplements.


Nonetheless, you should see your physician at least on a quarterly basis
to have your thyroid medication and function monitored. Your physician
will help you determine whether your thyroid has recovered to the point
of being able to reduce the thyroid medication or if you need to increase
your dose of medication.


In addition, I highly recommend working with a professional who is
well-versed in nutrition and functional medicine.


Consider making one or more of the following professionals part of your
health care team:


• Chiropractors. Chiropractors have an exceptional understanding
of human physiology, and many pursue advanced education in
nutrition and functional medicine.


• Naturopaths. Naturopaths focus on restoring the body’s innate
ability to heal, often through nutritional means. Many are trained
in a similar, “root-cause” approach that is the most beneficial to
autoimmune disease.


• Compounding or Integrative Pharmacists. Many of these
