Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals: Anatabine lozenges available as
Anatabloc®. These supplements can be bought over the counter, but their
manufacturing process and clinical research are pharmaceutical-grade. I
recommend unflavored lozenges for those who may be sensitive to the
original minty formulation. The company is currently working on ad-
ditional hypoallergenic products. Update: Anatabine is not available at
the time of this writing.

Pure Encapsulations: The majority of products I use are from this compa-
ny as all of the supplements are pure and hypoallergenic. They also contain
no gluten, dairy, or other excipients that may cause sensitivity or impair
absorption. Pure Encapsulations has extremely tight quality controls, and
each product undergoes an extensive product testing program involving
verification of label claims, potency, and purity by third-party laboratories.

Pure Encapsulations sells their products only to health care professionals,
so patients usually have to purchase the products through their health care
providers. The company, however, has allowed me to set up an e-store as
a convenience for my readers, and the products I recommend and use can
be viewed and purchased at thyroidpharmacist.com.

I use betaine with pepsin, n-acetyl cysteine, L-glutamine, B 12 , Daily
Stress Formula (adrenal adaptogens), zinc picolinate, and curcumin with
piperine exclusively from this company. Pure Encapsulations also makes
amino acids, evening primrose oil, digestive enzymes, cod liver oil, and
many other high-quality products. When I go out to dinner, I use their
Gluten and Dairy Digest product in case of accidental exposures. (I have
been sorry too many times after waiters were surprised gluten was found
in flour and bread: “Here’s your gluten-free meal with a big piece of bread
on top!”) This product minimizes but does not eliminate my reaction to
gluten and dairy.

Probiotics

As a pharmacologist, I always advise people to “start low and go slow”
when beginning supplements. This is especially true with probiotics as
they can cause significant die-off symptoms. This can cause further in-
flammation and autoimmune damage from endotoxins being released
from the dying pathogenic flora as they are displaced by the beneficial
bacteria in probiotics. Since people with Hashimoto’s usually have low
levels of alkaline phosphatase to begin with, we are unable to keep up
with the daily endotoxin release from the normal life cycle of pathogenic
bacteria, let alone the massive amounts released when bacteria start dying
off at a fast rate.
