The downsides of T4/T3 compounds is that specially trained compound-
ing pharmacists must produce them and they take time to prepare.
Additionally, not all compounding pharmacies are equal, and a special-
ized process is required to prepare an accurate dose of compounded thy-
roid medications.
This is because compounded thyroid medications are dosed in 1/1000th
of a milligram. There is a lot of room for error, and I always recommend
working with pharmacies that use Professional Compounding Centers
of America (PCCA) thyroid starters. PCCA pre-dilutes the thyroid hor-
mones 1000 times, allowing for more precise dosing.
Thus, patients might have to travel out of their way to find a compound-
ing pharmacy. We have a list of compounding pharmacies on the thyroid-
pharmacist.com website under the “Resources” tab.
Questions to ask your compounding pharmacist:
9 What types of fillers are used?
9 What is the source of the materials (we prefer PCCA
source materials)?
9 Is the compound slow-release or immediate-release?
Other Options
Nature-Throid®, WP Thyroid®, and Tirosint® are other hypoallergenic pre-
scription medications. There are many options for thyroid hormone treat-
ment. Individuals should work with an open-minded physician to find the
thyroid medication that works best for them.
