Steroids have been used to suppress the immune process, but antibodies
and thyroid dysfunction returned after discontinuation. Chloroquine, an
antimalarial drug also used for rheumatoid arthritis and cancer, has been
shown to reduce anti-thyroid antibodies. Its use is not recommended
because of toxic effects.
For cases in which the thyroid gland is extremely painful, surgery may be
considered. This surgery removes the entire thyroid gland, and the person
is put on lifelong thyroid replacement hormone.3,4
