7: Iodine Controversy

The thyroid is sensitive to iodine levels and has been shown to adapt its
physiology based on the available levels of iodine. The relationship between
iodine intake and occurrence of thyroid disease has been described as hav-
ing a U-shaped distribution—another Goldilocks supplement.

Researchers in Denmark found the effect of iodine on hypothyroidism
seemed to be U-shaped as well, with BOTH insufficient and excessive
dietary amounts causing hypothyroidism! Insufficient amounts were as-
sociated with goiters and non-autoimmune iodine-related hypothyroid-
ism, and excessive amounts of iodine have been associated with increased
rates of autoimmune thyroiditis.

A maximum daily threshold of 150 mcg is recommended.
