NEW MEANING

FOR COBRA POSE

WITH SNAKE

<2*$Ǘ

SERIOUSLY

Nope – we’re not kidding.
Goat Yoga is so 2018 and Snake Yoga has entered
the astonishing world of yoga hybrids. The practice
is making its debut in Vancouver in January 2019,
so by the time you read this it will be in full swing.
For just $60 a class, you too can enjoy the smooth
serenity of a real-life cobra alongside your yoga
practice (just kidding, it’s actually a boa constrictor).
Burlesque dancer Tristan Risk incorporates snakes
into her shows, and is now offering up her creepy
companions to help students enjoy the slithery
sensations. She says, “Snakes regard humans as
kind of a warm meat treat. We’re something to
hold onto...When we’re moving around, when
we’re moving with a snake, a snake will adjust
to the way that we’re moving.” While the venue
is waiting to be confirmed, details of the first
class are as good as finalised. Taught by yoga
instructor Lukas Knab, three snake handlers
will manage the six to eight pythons and boa
constrictors during the 90-minute practice.
There will be time at the beginning of the
practice to educate students on snake safety,
and time at its conclusion for participants to
“snuggle” with the reptiles. The best part?
You can even bring your own snake! Check
out their videos and keep up to date on the

meat-free

burgers at

everyone’s

summer barbeque

Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates are
raving about the new, 100% plant based burgers that
have just hit the shelves. If you’re sick of being the
vegan at the BBQ then you’ll be a fan of Beyond Burger
too – made mostly from pea protein and a handful of
other ingredients that may be worth looking into –
they’re free from soy, gluten, GMO and cholesterol.
Filled with protein, they have the colour and texture of
real beef – apparently even ‘bleeding’ (with beetroot
juice, of course) when cooked. Plant powered yogis
may even manage to convert a friend or two – the
meat-free goodies are receiving rave reviews!

Mindfulness

for miraculou

minds

If you’ve ever attempted a PHD or known someone
who has, then you’ll understand just how stressful it can be.
In fact, PHD students are six times more likely to experience
depression or anxiety than the general population. But, you
guessed it – mindfulness is here to help. A recent study
published in the Journal of American College Health shows
that mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve depression
and anxiety, and enhance feelings of optimism and resilience
around the PHD process. Participants reported that the
dedicated mindfulness practice provided respite and an
opportunity to relax, regroup and recharge, as well as
facilitating greater clarity and the ability to manage challenges.
The full study can be found at http://www.tandfonline.com, titled
‘A randomised controlled trial of the effects of mindfulness
practice on doctoral candidate psychological status.’
