Hampshire Life: February 2019 (^) Š 5
scheme this month, keen to
show off their early spring stars.
What a wonderful way to get
some positivity back than to
know you are supporting such
a worthwhile cause at the same
time as enjoying the pleasures of
the great outdoors.
All this talk of exploring
hidden gardens and charitable
Editor’s comment
I
often think of February as one
of the gloomiest months in the
year. Endless dark mornings
and early evenings coupled
with poor finances following the
extravagance of Christmas and
often cold and miserable weather
seems to create a major lack of
enthusiasm.
Valentine’s Day is there of
course to try and conjure a
cheeky smile halfway through
the month...but sadly for me
it’s not enough. Hate is a strong
word, but I’m sorry February I’m
just not a fan.
Determined then to try to
shake off my resent of what
is also, brightly, the shortest
month of the year, I’m feeling a
tiny flicker of inspiration after
reading all about the NGS’
snowdrop festival.
It may be cold outside but
I’m thinking there couldn’t be a
better way to make the most of
those few daylight hours than to
tour the county in search of signs
of spring.
As soon as those pretty white
maids start to peep through the
ground, I feel we can all breathe
a sigh of relief at the beginning of
the end of winter.
For anyone that isn’t familiar
with the National Gardens
Scheme, not only does it allow
access to exceptional private
gardens, but it has so far raised
over £55 million for nursing
and health charities since it was
founded in 1927.
There are several properties
in Hampshire opening their
doors to visitors through the
contributions is beginning to perk
me up. Hope to see you among
the snowdrops too!
