‘Standard’ wine rack
DESIGNERS: Paul Loh (left)
and David Leggett
This design duo have been producing
objects and furniture from their workshop
in Melbourne since 2012. Paul and
David are both architects and turned to
designing and making products partly
out of frustration with how long it takes
to complete an architectural project. “Now
we can make bespoke pieces that go into
our built work.” says Paul. They mainly use
birch plywood because of its “beautiful
face and end grain”. And the design of this
nine-bottle wine rack? “We were playing
around with the idea of a modular system,
but not one you stack,” says Paul. The rack
is drawn in software and directly cut using
a numerically controlled router. “The
router basically cuts the components we
draw,” says Paul. “This allows us to have
control over both the design and the
production process.”
$85, Top3 By Design, as before.

Ben-Tovim Design
‘Fold’ wine rack
DESIGNER: Jonathan Ben-Tovim
After realising there was something “very
liberating” about creating his own pieces,
industrial designer Jonathan Ben-Tovim
set up a warehouse space in Melbourne
seven years ago. “My work is driven by
the way things are made,” says Jonathan.
“I’m always on the lookout for interesting
industrial finishes or fabrication processes.
I’ll discover an interesting material or
factory that does something unusual,
and that will be the origin of a product.”
His ‘Fold’ series of wine racks, available in
a black, silver or yellow finish, was inspired
by the idea of making a flat material
rigid by the use of simple folds. Jonathan
laser-cuts a flat piece of metal, then
a machine folds each part into shape
before it is zinc-plated. The ‘Fold’ is
modular and can be stacked. “The object
becomes much more sculptural when it
takes on a larger form,” says Jonathan.
$245 each, b-td.com.

Echelon’ wine rack
DESIGNER: William Rhodes
Based in Tasmania, William Rhodes now
spends his days as a full-time painter and
sculptor, with entries in the Archibald Prize
and Glover Prize for landscape painting.
William’s career began in 2001 when he
collaborated with production company
Echelon. Despite being almost 20 years
old, his ‘Echelon’ wine rack is testament
to the timelessness of great design.
William describes his work as “architectural
hardware” and says “the inspiration was
for a self-interlocking modular system
that could adapt to individual requirements”.
The sculptural rack is solid extruded
aluminium and was created with
recyclability in mind. “Designing around
the unique qualities of materials is a way
to avoid using plastic,” says William.
The ‘Echelon’ is available ready-made
in a six-bottle, 12-bottle or 24-bottle
capacity, or it can be built-in and tailored
to custom spaces.
