cheat sheet
Who lives here: Steve Koolloos, an
architect and director of MCK Architects;
his wife Dani, a hairdresser; their children,
Aalto, 10, and Paradis, 8; and Oreo the cat.
Style of home: A three-bedroom reno
of a mid-century home on Sydney’s
Northern Beaches that Steve terms
“modern economical” in style.
This project started in June 2014
and took around two-and-a-half
years to complete due to unforeseen
financial and health constraints.

KITCHEN Basic black formwork sheets
were used to construct the kitchen
joinery in Steve’s Sydney home. The
benchtop comprises 12mm-thick porcelain
panels from Artedomus, and the custom
stools are by Exit Eighty Six. A wedding
photograph and photos of his children
Aalto and Paradis fill a pre-drilled MDF wall
along with (from left) Craig & Karl’s print
Glitch, an original print by Angus Martin,
a dowel sculpture by Steve and a Violera 1
lino print by Octavia Nardones.
EXTERIOR (below) A wide deck,
recycled timber cladding and painted
brickwork have overhauled the main
entrance. Steve made the front door
from hardwood, basing its design on
the plateau where the site is located. The
little gold gnome was a 40th birthday
present from his business partner.
