How many barrels of fuel were consumed by motorcycles in 2010?
To answer this question, we need to use all three graphs. First off, how much
fuel was used in 2010 total? Look at the line graph to find 450 million barrels.
What percent of this was used by miscellaneous vehicles? The bar graph tells us
that it is about 5%. So .05 × 450 = 22.5 million barrels for miscellaneous
vehicles. If motorcycles used 25% of that fuel, then .25 × 22.5 = 5.625 million
barrels.
Comprehension and Trend Questions
Graphs are not terribly difficult, once you get used to using multiple graphs at
once. But the SAT might ask you questions to see if you really understand what
the graph is and is not saying. Like this:
In 2010, what was the most popular miscellaneous vehicle?
A) Motorcycle
B) Segway
C) Snowmobile
D) Not enough information to answer the question
