Up Your Score SAT, 2018-2019 Edition The Underground Guide to Outsmarting The Test

(Tuis.) #1
f (x) = x + 7

All this means is that whatever number (x) we input, we add 7 to find our
output. It’s helpful to make a chart, using x as our input and y as our output, like
this:

x y

– 2 5

– 1 6

0 7

1 8

2 9

3 10

As you can see, any number (x) that goes in comes out with 7 added onto it.
We call all the numbers that can be entered into the function the domain, and all
the outputs are called the range. Annoyingly, mathematicians can also write the
same table, substituting “f(x)” for “y.” The SAT might express it either way.
f(x)=y. If you don’t remember this, then you will be immediately disowned by your family, friends, and society.
