Up Your Score SAT, 2018-2019 Edition The Underground Guide to Outsmarting The Test

(Tuis.) #1

As we’ve mentioned one million times already, the College Board’s website
(collegeboard.org) is surprisingly peppy for such a stuffy organization. You can
register for most of the SAT services we’ve described, and it offers advice not
only on test taking, but choosing a college and getting financial aid. There’s even
a “store” where you can buy books and software and a “library” where you can
review documents. They also have a “Question of the Day,” which is a good
place to see SAT practice questions. You can view the daily question online, or
you can sign up to get one emailed to you each day—which is an easy way to
integrate SAT prep into your routine. We recommend that you save this for a
Friday or Saturday night when you’re looking for a good time.
You can also download this as an app. I’m a fan of apps.

As we mentioned in Chapter 2, the College Board has teamed up with the
website Khan Academy to create exercises and videos that are geared
specifically to the new SAT. Check this out at khanacademy.org/sat. Khan offers
full-length SAT practice tests, which you can take timed or untimed, that come
with explanations of every problem. It is basically mandatory that you look at
these tests. Khan even provides an analysis of your strengths and weaknesses
and suggests areas where you need work.
What’s more, the non-SAT instructional math videos on Khan’s site are
particularly strong. The explanations can be helpful, quick refreshers on long-
forgotten concepts. You can rewind and replay Sal Khan’s videos as often as you
want and, unlike a live tutor, he will keep explaining the concepts with the same
dorky enthusiasm and humor. Definitely give the website a try.
Several SAT schools now have online versions of their courses that are less
expensive than their classroom offerings and have the excellent advantage that
when these courses start to bore you (and you will get bored if you expect the
other guys to be as witty and charming as we are), you can always log off.
The Princeton Review’s site (princetonreview.com) is pretty good. You can
take a practice test, sign up for a local “Strategy Session,” and get lots of college
advice. Kaplan’s website (kaptest.com) covers territory similar to The Princeton
Review’s, and their SAT course itself seems solid enough.
