Going

within

WINTER FEELS like
an appropriate time
for stillness, cosiness
and going within.
It’s a time for
exploring the nooks
and crannies of your
psyche, and observing how that plays
out in your relationships with others.
The Danish have a term, hygge,
which means warmth, intimacy
and cosiness. In essence, it’s about
creating a warm environment and
enjoying the good things in life with
the people you love and care about.
As we begin to take our awareness
within, we naturally become more
mindful of how we interact with the
world around us, and while this can
sometimes be a somewhat
confronting process, it’s a necessary
one on the path of a yogi.
As we move into the cooler
months, I’ve been contemplating
what self-nurturing means. When
once I believed this was something
that happened on the outside —
taking yourself for a massage,
enjoying a day in nature or even
moving through a physical practice
— I’ve come to see that nurturing is
really a process that happens within,
often uninfluenced by externalities.
When we nurture ourselves, we
inquire within and allow ourselves to
be with whatever process is taking
place ... not judging or pushing

anything aside, but simply being in
whatever comes up. And yoga can
really help to facilitate this process,
particularly the more restorative
practices which we’re delving into
in this edition.
Explore the poetry of Yin with
Mel McLaughlin (p.30), understand
the difference between Yin and
Restorative Yoga (p.74) and dive
into stillness with my favourite
Yin-inspired pose, pigeon (p.26).
As we discover stillness in our
physical bodies, we may notice this
beginning to influence our mental
and emotional experiences —
becoming more curious about the
nature of life and our own psyche.
Encourage that curiosity as you look
deeper into yoga’s rich philosophies
(Let Joy In p.38, Inside Out p. 42
and The Light of Awareness p.52).
I’m excited to share with you my
life-changing experience of studying
with the amazing Gwyn Williams in
Bali (p.44) and our sub-editor, Lou,
has summed up a topic that I’m so
passionate about in a beautiful piece
on minimalism (p.54) — a perfect
contemplation as we slow down
and invite some stillness.

Get cosy and go within.
