De Hoop is an absolute gold mine of a
nature reserve. Protected, and mostly in an
untouched state, there are few areas that
compare to such a pristine environment.
And there’s so much for the family to enjoy!
A three-hour drive from Cape Town, the
36 000-hectare conservation area forms
part of a World Heritage Site, with a marine
protected area that extends five kilometres
out to sea. The size of the marine protected
area makes it one of the largest in Africa,
and lazing on the beach and exploring the
many turquoise rock pools is a marvellous
way to spend an afternoon.
De Hoop offers some of the best land-
based whale viewing in the world, and it’s
the annual breeding ground for 40% of the
global Southern Right Whale population.
Between 80 and 300 whales can be seen
in the bay during peak season – perfect for
those who have whale watching on their
bucket lists!
There are several accommodation
options, ranging from self-catering
cottages to upmarket, fully catered suites
- ideal for families, friends or couples
looking for a romantic escape. The
rooms are beautiful with incredible views
everywhere you look.
The Fig Tree Restaurant is open daily
for meals and guests can also sign up
from this hub for a number of activities,
from interpretative marine walks to
guided birdwatching and eco-quad biking.
Mountain bikes are available for hire, but
if you prefer you can relax at the resort,
go for a swim or play a game of tennis.
Picnic baskets can be pre-booked to
enjoy down at the beach, beneath a fig
tree, or overlooking the vlei. Or you can
spoil yourself with a variety of revitalising
beauty and body treatments at the spa.
If you’re an avid birdwatcher it’s worth
exploring the Potberg Mountains, home
to a colony of endangered Cape vultures.
If hiking or cycling are more your thing,
you can enjoy close-up encounters with
bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland,
baboons and ostrich. De Hoop is ideal if
you love being outdoors and in nature.
VENUE HIGHLIGHTS: Excellent staff
and the complete outdoor experience
that De Hoop offers: sea, sand dunes,
vlei, mountains and the diverse flora
and fauna.
