Your Family - April 2017

(John Hannent) #1
While there’s nothing wrong with the occasional drink at a social
function or even a glass of wine in the evening with dinner, heavy
drinking can cause significant damage to your body and has even
been linked to liver disease, heart disease and diabetes. Drinking
more than three or four glasses of alcohol a day, for an extended
period, causes fatty liver disease, the first stage of liver disease.
Excessive drinking has also been linked to certain cancers: mouth
cancer, cancer of the upper throat and food pipe, voice box, breast,
bowel and liver. Your heart is also at risk from heavy drinking as it
raises your blood pressure and can cause irregular heart rhythms.
Many people who drink heavily complain that they’re unable to
sleep, and that their sleep is interrupted. This is because alcohol
affects the brain’s built-in system for regulating sleep. Stomach
ulcers and inflammation are regular side effects of heavy drinking.

IS YOUR BODY

WATER-HEALTHY?

It can’t be stressed enough how important water is
for the proper functioning of your body. Numerous
problems can be linked to simply not drinking
enough water. Often you’ll find when you’re tired
and lethargic that drinking water boosts your
energy levels. If you don’t drink enough water, the
oxygen levels in your blood will drop. If you suffer
from indigestion on a regular basis, before rushing
off to the doctor, look at how much water you’re
drinking in the day. Your problem could be linked to
a lack of water consumption. Another common side
effect of not drinking enough water is constipation.
If you feel a little blocked, try increasing your water
intake to get things moving. Other side effects
caused by lack of hydration include tired-looking
eyes, dark circles under your eyes, dull skin, dry
scalp, bad breath, frequent headaches, weight
gain and joint pain. Make sure you keep those
hydration levels up!

If you’re worried about drinking tap water,
Kuro-Bo Activated Charcoal might be worth
considering. The hand-cut sticks are activated by
adding them to boiling water for 10 minutes. You
then add them to a minimum of two litres of tap
water. The water is then stored in the fridge or
on the kitchen counter for at least three hours to
purify. The charcoal works by binding all toxins
to the stick, while calcium and magnesium
enrich the water and improve its taste.
Each stick lasts approximately three
months and costs around R215 from
